Old Lebanese Rival Becomes Syria's New Friend

AMMAN -- A former Lebanese general who had once fought a bloody "war of liberation" against Syria received a warm welcome in Damascus Wednesday as he embarked on a historic visit that may be instrumental in normalizing relations between the two neighboring countries.

This mornings AP headline reads "Pakistan U-Turns on Sending Spy Chief to India." Three links down on the Google "news page," its collection of links is the Hollywood Today headline: "Mumbai Massacre Now Linked to Pakistan: War to Follow?" making it clear that those who generate current world problems are not merely the lawless and conscience-less villains at the extremes, but rather that our problems stem with near equal abundance from dysfunction, irresponsibility and dangerous blindness in the heart of the "mainstream."
Law Over Gun
BEIRUT -- One of the great weaknesses in the modern Middle East that explains much of the chronic violence and political thuggery of the past half century is the thin state of the rule of law in comparison with the rule of the gun.

Az-Zaman (LONDON/IRAQ): UN: Thousands of Iraqis Not Tried After Years of Detention – Shortly before 15,000 Iraqis in US jails are to be turned over to the Iraqi authorities, the United Nations said in an annual report published yesterday that the human rights conditions in Iraq continue to deteriorate.
