Assad Forges New Ties With Lebanon

AMMAN -- Syrian President Bashar Assad has made his declared intention to establish full diplomatic ties with Lebanon official. He issued a decree that would see embassies in Beirut and Damascus for the first time in their history.

ACRE, Israel -- An uneasy calm has settled on the mixed Arab-Israeli town of Acre in northern Israel after five days of almost continuous rioting left widespread physical damage to property, and irreparable emotional and psychological damage to the citys residents who in the past have co-existed in an uneasy and fragile peace.

We are disturbed by the degree to which "Arab" has become the metaphorical mud to sling against your opponent. Last week, for example, the Republican Jewish Coalition released a document in which they use the term Pro-Arab as a pejorative accusation. For his part, Rush Limbaugh has joined in by declaring that Obama is in fact an Arab American. Then, last Friday, after a supporter called Senator Barack Obama "an Arab," Senator John McCain came to the defense of his political opponent by saying, "No, maam. Hes a decent family man and citizen...."

Al-Hayat (LONDON): International Markets Revived, Arab Bourses Retrieve Fourth of Their Losses – The "rescue funds" allocated for controlling the financial markets in the 27 European Union nations and Switzerland have been estimated at $3 trillion, after which a series of additional European measures will be taken to "contain the link" with the US markets.
