The CrisisWatch report, published by the Belgium-based International Crisis Group, says there were 10 conflict situations in September around the world that deteriorated. Heading the monthly report was a dramatic upturn in rebel violence in the east of DR Congo. Clashes between militant leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda and the Congolese army resulted in what the United Nations estimated as 100,000 people that fled the violence, Crisis Group reported.
The report also says as many as 100 were killed in September during rebel violence in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta. The rebel Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta waged several attacks in September on facilities belonging to international oil companies Shell and Chevron.
The massive bomb explosion at the Marriott hotel in Islamabad that killed 53 people also topped the report. The explosion fed the ongoing debate over whether Pakistan's new government will be able to maintain stability in the country.
Also cited in the report was an uptick in civilian casualties in Sri Lanka as the military continues to wage a campaign against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam terrorist organization. The CrisisWatch report also cited a deteriorating security situation in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, North Korea, the Philippines, Thailand and Yemen.
