NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- An official from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe told the United Nations Thursday that the OSCE is committed to countering terrorism.

Raphael Perl, the head of the OSCE action against terrorism unit, spoke during the United Nations meeting on global counter-terrorism strategy. Perl said the OSCE is striving to advance counter-terrorism commitments for the intergovernmental organization's 56 participating states, the OSCE reported.

Perl said the OSCE is working with states to crack down on money-laundering and terrorism financing, along with implementing new cargo security measures at seaports and border checkpoints, among other ongoing counter-terrorism measures.

"The U.N. global counter-terrorism strategy sets important strategic guidelines in the campaign against global terrorism. But it also recognizes that the strategy requires implementation: global, regional and national," Perl said in a statement.

"These are the three pillars of strategy implementation -- and regional organizations such as the OSCE have a central role to play here. The OSCE has been very active indeed."
