KHARTOUM, Sudan, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A riot over food at a refugee camp in the volatile Darfur region of Sudan has resulted in the death of one person while several others were injured.

U.N. officials report a shortage of food at a refugee camp in Um Shalaya, Sudan, resulted in violent demonstrations Tuesday. The unrest at the camp, where as many as 6,600 live as a result of ongoing violence in the region, sparked a riot that killed one person, the United Nations reported Thursday.

Humanitarian aid officials have been forced to reduce the amount of sorghum grain available as a result of the security threats to supply lines being shipped in the region over ground routes. Violent rebels have attacked several convoys transporting aid recently, which has prompted concerns over how to keep the distribution network safe.

Compounding the aid distribution difficulties is the ongoing stalemate over adopting a peace plan between rebels and the Sudanese government.
