Mine removal expert killed in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A U.N. official was killed Wednesday while working to clear landmines in the Blue Line zone between Lebanon and Israel when a bomb exploded.

A de-mining unit with the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon has been working to clear unexploded cluster bombs and landmines used by Israel at the end of its monthlong 2006 war with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, the United Nations reported.

Officials say a bomb disposal expert with the U.N. unit was killed when a bomb detonated Wednesday near the southern city of Aytarun, Lebanon. A U.N. statement called the death a tragedy.

The name of the official was not made available. According to the United Nations, an investigation in under way.

Officials say more than 30 people have died in explosions as a result of the unexploded remnants left over from the 2006 war.
