BAGHDAD, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The Sunni Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq Wednesday condemned a raid on the offices of its secretary-general by Iraqi national troops.

The politically influential association said in a statement on its Web site that a unit of Iraqi forces called the Muthanna Brigade raided the offices of AMSI Secretary-General Hareth Sulaiman al-Dari in western Baghdad.

The association said it had called on the Iraqi government to avoid such activity during the initial days of the holy month of Ramadan, but "they did not listen," the statement said.

The AMSI is an organization of Sunni religious leaders established four days after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. It opposes the U.S. presence in Iraq and has spoken in support of the insurgency.

The statement said the AMSI "denounced this provocative and unjustifiable attack" and blamed the Iraqi government for any negative consequences that may result.

The group also claims Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki manipulated a court summons for Dari for use as an arrest warrant.
