LYON, France, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Interpol officials say the approaching October general assembly in Russia will focus on how to further develop national law enforcement capacities.

Interpol's 77th annual general assembly, scheduled to start Oct. 7 in St. Petersburg, will bring together top security authorities from around the world to discuss how to advance ongoing security efforts.

Officials say the four-day conference will focus on "developing national law enforcement capacity to enhance international policing," Interpol reported.

Other topics expected to be addressed are the recent security operations surrounding the Olympic Games in Beijing. During the games Interpol launched for the first time a video hotline that directly connected security authorities in China with top Interpol officials as part of an effort to enhance security measures.

Officials say law enforcement and security authorities participating in the conference will also likely discuss ongoing campaigns targeting transnational criminal networks and Interpol's notices system that sends out alerts when a fugitive or prison escapees may be traveling abroad.
