Abul-Gheit meets with new Darfur mediator

CAIRO, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Egyptian officials met Wednesday with the new head of the U.N.-African Union envoy to the Darfur region of Sudan in a move to restart a stalled peace process.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit met with Djibril Bassole, the U.N.-AU chief mediator for Darfur, in Cairo Wednesday to discuss the deteriorating security situation in Darfur.

Abul-Gheit said the meeting with Bassole, appointed to the U.N.-AU post in August, is part of an effort by Egypt to help restart peace negotiations that have festered as a resulted of renewed violence, the Egyptian government reported.

Abul-Gheit said that Egypt is calling the situation in Darfur a crisis and that a new negotiations between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebels need to be restarted. Abul-Gheit called for "holding, as quickly as possible, a high-level meeting under the U.N. and AU sponsorship," the release said.

Egypt officials are calling for an agreement on a new roadmap to achieve lasting stability and peace Darfur.
