Crisis Group's CrisisWatch report cited Georgia's offensive into the breakaway region of South Ossetia and the much criticized military response by Russia as causing a serious concern for the stability in the region. The report suggested that as many as 158,000 people have been displaced as a result of the violence, Crisis Group reported.

CrisisWatch report also cited a surge in violence in Somalia. A peace deal signed in the country in August is now in jeopardy after a rejection of the agreement by rebel hardliners. Islamist militants took control of the Kismayo port in the country's south. The violence resulted in an estimated 100 people who were killed.

The terrorist bombings in Algeria that killed 80 people and the military coup in Mauritania made the monthly report along with violence in "Afghanistan, Bolivia, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Fiji, Kashmir, and the Philippines," the release said.
