CTBTO and WMO announced the deployment of a new nuclear detection technique called Atmospheric Transport Modeling. Officials say the modeling technique enables a CTBTO monitoring station to trace a nuclear explosion's origin through tracking nuclear particles to where they originate, the CTBTO reported.
CTBTO has 80 radionuclide stations that through collaboration with the WMO's global meteorological data will improve on Atmospheric Transport Modeling calculations for the CTBTO's International Monitoring System. Officials at the CTBTO and WMO will corroborate data between facilities to establish where an explosion took place within 24 hours.
"The synergy … allows for a much more accurate location of a potential nuclear explosion. The more precisely the verification system can determine the location of a possible nuclear explosion … the greater the chances of a subsequent on-site inspection finding concrete evidence of a recent nuclear test," the release said.
