DISPUR, India, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Several members of the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam surrendered to Indian forces in the Kamrup district of the northeastern state of Assam.

Indian Maj. Gen. Chander Prakash said 39 militants surrendered to local officials at a facility maintained by the rehabilitation group the Red Horns Division in lower Assam.

"The people of Assam and even most of the ULFA cadre want peace, so they have decided to surrender," he said.

Members of the opposition Adivasi National Liberation Army and the militant Karbi Longri National Liberation Front surrendered along with the 31 members of ULFA, the Press Trust of India reported Friday.

Prakash said the militants turned over 32 weapons and 11 hand grenades when they surrendered.

The United Liberation Front of Assam is a militant separatist group seeking an autonomous state in northeastern India. The U.S State Department classifies the organization as a "group of concern."
