In a unanimous decision, the U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution that would extend the mandate of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon until August 2009, the United Nations reported.

The UNIFIL mandate was established after a cease-fire agreement was reached ending a monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. With the announced extension, UNIFIL will continue operating in the area between the Blue Line and the Litani River, ensuring the border region remains secured from unauthorized weapons and personnel.

Announcing the extension, Security Council officials called for "a new strategic environment in southern Lebanon" and an "expansion of coordinated activities between UNIFIL and the Lebanese armed forces," the release said.
