UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the Security Council in New York to step up its efforts to address the expanding security threats around the world.

Ban said threats posed to international security are increasingly complex and that as a result, more work needs to be done to improve the "working methods" employed by the Security Council, the United Nations reported.

Ban acknowledged the progress that has been made by the Security Council, but he said threats to stability and the ongoing peacekeeping efforts require greater responsibilities to address the increased demands.

"This makes it essential for the Security Council to keep addressing issues relating to its working methods, including by implementing the measures set out in the note of the president of the Council two years ago," Ban said in a statement.

"These measures are a key step in making the United Nations more efficient, effective and accountable in the face of a growing array of new challenges."
