TBILISI, Georgia, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe ended a border security workshop in Georgia Thursday aimed at countering transnational criminal threats.

The workshop, held in the Lagodekhi district in eastern Georgia bordering Azerbaijan, was focused on enhancing border security between the two Eastern European countries. For two days Georgian and Azeri security authorities trained in countering transnational terrorist threats and the trafficking of drugs and weapons.

Strengthening border security and enhancing cooperation are parts of an OSCE program to develop more efficient border management agencies in Eastern Europe.

"The program enhances the efficiency of border security and management by highlighting the importance of the OSCE border security and management concept and the integrated border management strategy recently developed and adopted by Georgia," Ryan Grist, OSCE Georgia mission deputy head, said in a statement.
