NEW DELHI, June 30 (UPI) -- A conference of the world's top Islamic scholars held in India condemned terror and urged that women should be respected.

The All India Ulema Council, an apex body of India's Islamic scholars, organized the daylong conference titled "Unity, Love and Tolerance -- Islamic Perspective."

The convener of the council, Sami Bubere, proposed the resolution at the end of the session, which was passed unanimously. The aim of the conference was to give a proper Islamic perspective on different issues, Bubere said.

Scholars from Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Holland, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Bahrain, besides India, participated in the meeting. Noted Libyan scholar Dr. Mohammed Shahumi, founder of Al Hayat Research Center Mumbai; Maulana Sayyed Hussain Mehdi al-Hussaini, president of Darul Kutub, Egypt; and Dr. Ayman Fowad Sayyed were among other intellectuals who addressed the conference.

This is the second time top Muslim scholars and intellectuals have come out against terrorism, after India's top Islamic religious body, Darul-Uloom, passed a unanimous resolution condemning terrorism and describing it as anti-Islamic.
