Central Africa grows impatient with rebels

KAMPALA, Uganda, June 23 (UPI) -- A top U.N. official says the ongoing violence committed by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda has led to a growing impatience in the region.

Joaquim Chissano, the U.N. secretary-general's special envoy for the LRA-affected area in northern Uganda, says the atrocities committed by the LRA and a lack of progress toward signing a peace deal is causing the leaders of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic to grow weary and impatient, the United Nations reported.

Chissano says the impatience stems from a series of peace deals that have consistently fallen through the cracks after LRA leader Joseph Kony failed to sign off. Kony has ended negotiations twice after failing to attend peace deal signing ceremonies.

Government authorities in the region have considered taking more serious measures against LRA rebels. Despite the threat of action, officials say they are still willing to continue the peace process but that there are "no plans to renegotiate the contents of the various accords reached this year," the release said.
