The best news from Israel right now is that the ceasefire with Hamas is holding. This may be disquieting to the far right. It is an article of faith for the right that it is impossible to cut a deal with Hamas. But that is precisely what Israel did when, seeing no alternative, it agreed to the ceasefire. Hamas has demonstrated that it can end the violence when it wants to and that it can enforce peace and quiet.
Conflict Tests Ties Between the Georgian and Russian Orthodox
On Sept. 6, the New York Times published a story by Sophia Kishkovsky titled "Conflict Tests Ties Between the Georgian and Russian Orthodox Churches." The author explains the struggle and sorrow experienced by Orthodox leaders of the two respective churches over the recent military engagement between Russia and Georgia.

REVENGE KILLING: Lebanese singer Susan Tamim was found dead at her apartment in Dubai on July 29. She had been stabbed to death in an alleged revenge killing for ending a three-year affair with an Egyptian multi-billionaire. Almost a year ago to the day, in a totally surprising move, the Israeli Air Force bombed a suspected nuclear facility in Syria. Interestingly, over the previous summer, Israel had reportedly warned the George W. Bush administration. Despite opposition from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Israel moved to eliminate what it believed was an imminent threat.
