What the Arab papers said on Oct. 14:

Al-Hayat (LONDON): International Markets Revived, Arab Bourses Retrieve Fourth of Their Losses – The "rescue funds" allocated for controlling the financial markets in the 27 European Union nations and Switzerland have been estimated at $3 trillion, after which a series of additional European measures will be taken to "contain the link" with the US markets. But the funds compensated only a small percentage of the losses, while the Arab bourses retrieved one fourth of their losses in two days of trading.

Az-Zaman (LONDON; IRAQ): Maliki Calls for British Forces to Withdraw – Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki criticized the secret deal that he said Britain reached with al-Mahdi Army of Moqtada Sadr last year. He said his country is no longer in need of British combat forces to protect security in southern Iraq and called for the British forces, estimated in the south at 4,100 troops, to withdraw from Iraq.

Al-Anwar (LEBANON): Probe Reveals Terror Cell Planned More Attacks – Lebanon's army and security authorities continued their raids in the north looking for the head of a terrorist cell that was captured on Sunday on charges of carrying out bombings in Tripoli. Security officials said the group, accused of the Sept. 29 bombing in Tripoli that killed seven people, including four soldiers, and the Aug. 13 attack that killed 14, was plotting to carry out more bombings.

Al-Arab al-Yawm (JORDAN): Kadima and Labor Agree to Form Coalition Government – Israeli political sources said that Kadima, led by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, signed an initial agreement to form a coalition government with the Labor Party, led by Defense Minister Ehud Barak. The agreement is another step that increases Livni's chances of becoming the next Israeli prime minister.

Al-Gomhuria (EGYPT): Arab-Israeli Confrontation at the Euro-Mediterranean Parliament – The last session of the Euro-Mediterranean conference of parliamentarians, held in Jordan yesterday, witnessed a confrontation between the Arab delegations, especially the Egyptian one, and the Israeli Knesset members over Israel's failure to live up to its commitments in the peace process. The head of the Egyptian delegation, Mohammed Abul Ainein, denied the Israeli delegation's claims that the Arabs came to accuse and attack, not to dialogue.
