What the Arab papers said on Aug. 29:

al-Quds al-Arabi (LONDON): New Missiles For Hezbollah to Strike Deep Into Israel – Arab sources told Al-Quds al-Arabi that Lebanon's Hezbollah organization has recently received advanced Iranian missiles that can strike in the heart of Israel, adding they are ready for use if Tel Aviv decided to attack Iran or if the United States launched a regional war on Tehran. Iran has also recently given special support to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip to weaken the truce between Hamas and Israel.

Al-Hayat (LONDON): Shallah Expects No Reconciliation Before Palestinian Presidential Election – The secretary-general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Ramadan Shallah, warned that if no national reconciliation is achieved before the expected Palestinian presidential election in January, the internal conflict will only worsen. He told Al-Hayat that the truce with Israel in Gaza was very fragile because Israel has not lived up to its commitment in the agreement, and called for revising the truce to ensure that it is not "for free."

As-Safir (LEBANON): Bad Coordination Hits Military Helicopter – As the final touches were being made to name a new chief for the Lebanese army, a military helicopter was shot down by mistake yesterday during a training routine north of the Litani River, killing the pilot and injuring his comrade. It appeared that bad coordination between the resistance and the army was the cause, as the [Hezbollah] resistance, tense from Israeli threats, was not informed in advance about the army training in the area.

Al-Bayan (UNITED ARAB EMIRATES): Occupation Holds Maneuvers in Shebaa – The Israeli army has conducted military maneuvers in the occupied Shebaa Farms in the past 48 hours that included live ammunition. The sounds were heard across the borders in Lebanon. The war games came after Israeli officials threatened to hit the entire country if Hezbollah is given more legitimacy in the Beirut government, and as Israeli war jets flew over Shebaa and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

Al-Ahram (EGYPT): Obama Becomes First Black Presidential Candidate for Democratic Party – Senator Barack Obama has entered history after he officially won the U.S. Democratic Party's presidential candidacy, becoming the first black man in U.S. history to compete as a contender in one of the two largest parties. The endorsement came after a clever maneuver by his previous party foe, Senator Hillary Clinton, who surprised delegates in the third day of the party convention to urge them to unite in backing Obama.
