Az-Zaman (IRAQ): Iraqi Refugees in Egypt Refuse to Return to Baghdad – Iraqi refugees living in Cairo told Az-Zaman that the free repatriation trips to Baghdad upon the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is more of a political promotion for the government, and that those who returned in two flights did so because they had run out of savings and could not find work in Egypt. They said the Iraqi government has not given any assurances that they could return to their homes, which remain occupied by gunmen. Some 100,000 Iraqi refugees prefer to stay in Cairo for the time being.
Al-Fadjr (ALGERIA): Suicide Blast Kills 43 People, Injures 45 – The terrorist suicide attack targeting a national police academy in Issers Tuesday killed 43 people and injured 45 others, the majority of them civilian university graduates seeking to join the national police force. The terrorists this time chose the ideal time to carry out their criminal plans to kill as many people as people to gain attention at the expense of the blood of Algeria's sons.
Tishreen (SYRIA): Assad on Working Visit to Russia – Syrian President Bashar Assad will today begin a two-day working visit to the Russian Federation at the invitation of President Dmitry Medvedev, his third visit to Russia. The trip is aimed at further boosting bilateral relations in all fields, which officials in both countries say have been dramatically bolstered since Assad's first visit in 2005.
Al-Gomhuria (EGYPT): Shocking Fire Destroys National Assembly Building – A fire engulfed the Shura Council (upper house) building in Cairo yesterday afternoon and spread to another old building, destroying three floors that house the parliamentary committee offices. President Hosni Mubarak was following efforts to put out the fire, as 120 fire engines battled to extinguish the blaze that continued for 10 hours.
Akhbar al-Khaleej (BAHRAIN): Ramzi Writes Bahrain's Name in Olympics Registry – Runner Rashid Ramzi has added Bahrain's name in the Olympics Registry when he won a gold medal for the 1,500-meter race at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday, finishing the distance at 3:32:94 minutes. This is the first medal for Bahrain in the history of its participation at the Olympic Games.
