What the Arab papers said on July 8:

al-Quds al-Arabi (London): Abbas Meets Palestinian Leaders in Damascus, But Not Hamas – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday held talks with the leadership of Islamic Jihad in Damascus as part of his contacts with opposition groups, but he did not meet Hamas' political chief Khaled Meshaal. Officials said their talks are aimed at reunifying internal ranks. Abbas also met separately with the heads of the leftist Democratic and Popular Fronts for the Liberation of Palestine.

Al-Ayyam (West Bank): Israeli Occupation Forces Continue Assault on Citizens and Property, 10 Injured – The West Bank village of Naaleen remains under siege for the fourth straight day by Israeli occupation forces, who yesterday reinforced their presence inside the village that is threatened by the Israeli apartheid separation wall. Ten people were injured in renewed violent clashes between the villagers and the Israeli army in the village.

Al-Hayat (London): 41 Killed in Indian Embassy Bombing, Afghanistan Hints at Pakistani Involvement – A suicide bomber yesterday carried out the largest attack of its kind on a foreign embassy in Afghanistan , targeting the Indian diplomatic mission and killing at least 41 people, including the Indian consul and the military attaché. It was the largest single casualty toll since the ousting of the Taliban regime in 2001. The Afghan government implied Pakistani responsibility for the deadly attack.

Al-Sabah (Iraq): Jordanian King and Erdogan Due in Baghdad Within Hours – BAGHDAD HAS completed protocol and security preparations to receive Jordan's King Abdullah II and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who expected within the next 24 to 48 hours. The visits confirm the Iraqi government's diplomatic success after making great success on the security and political levels.

Al-Mustaqbal (Lebanon): Saad Hariri Files Suit for Truth – Lebanese MP Saad Hariri yesterday filed a lawsuit against the alleged perpetrators who carried out the terrorist attack that killed his father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, in February 2005. The suit includes complaints against four former security officials, currently in custody, on charges of murder through explosives, terrorist activities, and conspiracy to assassinate Hariri and his comrades. If convicted, the punishment is the death penalty.
