What the Arab papers said on May 19:

Az-Zaman (London; Iraq): 'Arab country involved in Mughnieh assassination,' Damascus says – A Syrian source said that investigations into the assassination of Hezbollah's military leader, Imad Mughnieh, in Damascus was making progress. The source said that more than one suspect has been arrested in connection with the assassination, adding that one of the detainees carries an Arab citizenship and has strong ties with a minister in his country, which he did not identify.

Al-Bayan (United Arab Emirates): Abbas: Bush's speech in Knesset angered us – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said yesterday that he informed U.S. President George W. Bush, in a meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh Saturday, that his speech in the Israeli Knesset (parliament) had "angered us." Abbas told reporters he called on the U.S. president to adopt a "balanced position," as he appeared less optimistic in achieving a breakthrough in peace negotiations with Israel.

An-Nahar (Lebanon): Doha conference fluctuates in third day – The third day of the Doha conference over Lebanon was swinging yesterday between fears of its collapse and hopes in achieving a breakthrough. The leader of Qatar, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa, yesterday intervened directly by bringing together the rival Lebanese leaders in a meeting, telling them of a Qatari vision that contains proposals and ideas to end the differences over a new electoral law and a national unity government.

al-Quds al-Arabi (London): Bush sees Middle East without Hezbollah, Hamas – U.S. President George W. Bush concluded his Middle East tour by calling on regional countries to confront what he called Iran's nuclear ambitions and called for challenging what he called terrorism. At the World Economic Forum in Sharm el-Sheikh, Bush outlined his vision for 60 years ahead where there would be a free Palestinian state, as well as a free Iran and Syria without Hamas and Hezbollah.

Akhbar al-Khaleej (Bahrain): Salafists win in Kuwaiti elections, women fail again – The Salafist Islamists in Kuwait significantly consolidated their representation in the new National Assembly, as did the Shiites, according to the results of the early legislative elections. Women failed to enter parliament for the second time since they were allowed to participate, in which none of the 27 female candidates succeeded in winning a seat.
