What the Arab papers said on April 23:

Al-Seyassah (Kuwait): Neighboring conference avenges for Iraq by marginalizing Syria and Iran – The third foreign ministers' conference of Iraq's neighbors ended in Kuwait with unanimous agreement to support Iraq. But clear differences emerged in the details of such support, as the Iraqis expressed dismayed about unfulfilled promises. Several Arab and international positions blamed some of the neighboring countries for the fighting in Iraq, as Iran and Syria defended themselves from these accusations.

As-Safir (Lebanon): Crisis heads toward new escalation … Kuwait declaration destroys Arab initiative – The group calling itself "Lebanon's friends," who met in Kuwait yesterday on the sidelines of the conference on Iraq, took a new step toward escalating the Lebanese crisis and expanding the gap between the Lebanese rivals. There was provocation and animosity toward Syria, which warned against American and French efforts to internationalize the Lebanese crisis and steal it from the hands of Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa.

Tishreen (Syria): Muallem and Kouchner discussed Lebanese crisis – Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem met yesterday with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner in Kuwait, during which they held useful talks on regional issues, particularly the political crisis in Lebanon. They exchanged views frankly on the issues discussed and ways to resolve them.

Al-Quds al-Arabi (London): Zawahiri attacked Iran and Muslim Brotherhood, affirmed central role of al-Qaida in Lebanon – Al-Qaida's second-in-command Ayman Zawahiri said in an audio message aired on a Web site Tuesday that Lebanon will have a central role in the upcoming battles with the "crusaders and Jews," and blasted Hamas for accepting a peace deal with Israel. He also launched an attack on Al-Manar TV, belonging to Lebanon's Hezbollah, and accused Iran of colluding with America.

Okaz (Saudi Arabia): American arrested on charges of passing nuclear secrets to Israel – The U.S. Justice Department yesterday announced the authorities have arrested an American with access to military facilities in the United States on charges of giving secret information to Israel, including information on nuclear weapons. The U.S. sources said that Ben-Ami Kadish, who was a mechanical engineer at a U.S. Army weapons center, is charged with four counts, including working as an agent for Israel.
