What the Arab papers said on Feb. 4:

Al-Ahram (Egypt): Egypt will not allow a repetition of the Rafah crossing incidents – Egypt has stressed it will not allow a repetition of what happened at the Rafah crossing with Gaza because it has borders, territories, and sovereignty with the right and duty to protect them. Government officials said this was the message that was relayed to Hamas leaders during their recent visit to Egypt, adding that Cairo had allowed the massive flow of Palestinians into Egypt to ease their human suffering under the Israeli siege.

Ash-Sharq al-Awsat (London): Debate over the entry of rockets and activists from Iran and Syria to Gaza through Rafah – A political debate erupted between Egypt and Israel after the latter's security services claimed the smuggling of advanced weapons and activists from Iran and Syria to Gaza from Egypt's Rafah border. Egypt and the Palestinian Hamas movement strongly denied any smuggling while the Rafah border wall was torn down.

Az-Zaman (London, Iraq): Iran takes oil from border without agreement – The general inspector of the Iraqi Oil Ministry Abdel Karim Luaibi told az-Zaman in London that Iran and Kuwait are pulling out oil from Iraqi oilfields on the borders and exporting it to international markets. He said Iraq has not signed any agreements with these countries to organize investments and revenues from these oil fields, adding that Baghdad is seeking to resolve this problem.

Al-Qabas (Kuwait): Tehran denounces French base in United Arab Emirates – Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the French ambassador in Tehran to protest France's plan to build a military base in the United Arab Emirates, saying foreign military expansion in the region contributes to more destabilization and instability. Meanwhile, Russia took a firm stand toward Iran's nuclear program by declaring it supports a new international resolution of sanctions against Iran.

Al-Bayan (United Arab Emirates): Damascus prefers Turkish over Arab mediation with Israel – Western and Syrian diplomatic sources said that Damascus prefers that Turkey or any other non-Arab country to undergo mediation between Syria on the one hand and Israel and United States on the other. They said such mediation would be more frank and transparent than dealing with some Arab countries, although Syria does not completely reject Arab countries to follow up on bringing their views closer together with Washington and Tel Aviv.
