An Iraq war veteran who deserted the US Army and sought refuge in Canada will return to the United States to pursue a battle with military authorities.

"I just decided that I've got to face my demons, put on my uniform and go back and tell the army that I don't want to participate in this war," said Darrell Anderson.

Anderson received a Purple Heart in Iraq after being wounded in a roadside bomb, but then became disillusioned and fled north of the border two years ago, the Toronto Sun reported Sunday.

Anderson, who is married to a Canadian, told the Lexington, KY, USA Herald-Leader he did not want to live "in limbo" in Canada after his lawyer missed the deadline to file a refugee claim.

Missing the deadline meant that he could not qualify for a work permit and might have been deported, The Sun reported.

Anderson faces a less-than-honorable discharge, a prison term, or dishonorable discharge.
