Turkish-Cypriot political party leader Dervis Eroglu has announced he failed to form a new government in breakaway northern Cyprus.

"We had a go at setting up a new government, but our efforts ended in failure," Eroglu told a gathering of his center-right National Unity Party in the Turkish-held sector of the divided capital, Nicosia, on Saturday.

Eroglu was tasked with forming a new government last week after prime minister Mehmet Ali Talat resigned following months of political deadlock that paralyzed his two-party coalition.

But the UBP chairman was unable to persuade any other party to join him in a new government in the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

He handed back the mandate to Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on Monday.

Denktash can either appoint a new prime minister-designate or use his authority to call early elections.
