German distribution giant Metro, the third biggest retailer worldwide, has opened its first store in Lahore, Pakistan, the company said Monday.

A second Metro Cash & Carry story is planned for the capital Islamabad and, at term, a total of 10 stores are expected to open in the country, a statement said.

The opening raised to 31 the number of countries where Metro has outlets.

Five hundred people are employed by Metro at present in Pakistan, including 300 staff in the new store and 200 others in Metro's local headquarters, which is also in Lahore.
