Milan fashion promises glamour, romance

PRIDE OF PLACE: Sophie Loren supplied glamour on the sidelines. Giorgio Armani pulled out all the stops on Tuesday for his ready-to-wear show for next summer in which Italian cinema icon Sophie Loren had pride of place, flanked by Simon Le Bon and the rest of the 1980s band Duran Duran, on the crest of their successful comeback.

Loren still turns heads at 70, a milestone Armani marked himself in July.

While Loren supplied the glamour off the catwalk, Armani staged a lavish spectacle, rapturously applauded, which he dedicated fondly to his legendary eccentric compatriot Elsa Schiaparelli.

Her inspiration could be felt in surreal, oriental touches, like the quirky spiral-shaped turban hats worn by every model, except those kitted out with Chinese coolie hats, and jokey accessories, such as bags like trompe l'oeil fans or diminutive-tasseled purses barely big enough for a credit card.

But the clothes bore the Armani stamp. His favorite pants were skin-tight, flaring from the calf and flapping at the ankles, or cut more amply like jodhpurs, as he showed in his Emporio line. Skirts were voluminous, floor-sweeping wraparounds in slippery satin, topped with sparkly vests or narrow jackets finishing in waistcoat points to give a flash of midriff.

For a finale he served up a dazzling display of evening wear including two diamante encrusted gowns fit for a screen goddess like Loren.

Alberta Ferretti also has a devoted following among the red-carpet crowd, including Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman, who are fans of her romantic and intensely feminine vision. Next summer's collection will not disappoint.
