The militant Islamic Army in Iraq (IAI), which had claimed to be holding two French journalists hostage, said it has ended its detention of the two.

The IAI said Radio France correspondent Christian Chesnot and Le Figaro reporter Georges Malbrunot were now covering the activities of the “resistance” in Iraq after reaching an “agreement” with the group.

The statement was sent by e-mail to the London-based Islamic Observatory on September 18.

The journalists were seized along with their Syrian driver, Muhammad Al Jundi, in south Baghdad on August 20.

The IAI had issued an ultimatum that France abandon a ban on Muslim headscarves being worn in public schools, which took effect on September 2.

The group has also claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and execution of an Italian journalist and two Pakistani workers.
