MODEST GAINS

Not one to let others take credit for his ideas, the governor of the Red Sea district recently publicly reminded the governor of nearby Quenna that it was only by copying the resident genius in Red Sea – himself – that the latter had come up with the brilliant idea of beautifying the area, cleaning the streets, and controlling pollution. Thus Quenna’s status as a tourist favorite is courtesy of Red Sea. Well, whoever’s bright idea it was, please give us some more.

(From Al Ahrar ) THE KIDS AREN’T ALRIGHT

In a peculiar incident in an agricultural city, 14 children were arrested, accused of attempting to destroy a wireless network transmitting station. Reportedly the kids – the oldest just 15 – tried to break in and burn the station down. They have been charged with “inciting chaos.” Clearly this is normally a deathly quiet place.

(From Al Ahrar ) WHERE SHAKIRA GETS HER LOOK

A semi-famous Lebanese singer has been enlightening Egypt’s press corps on how she is the most original of original pop stars, following accusations that she imitates the style of the more famous Colombian pop artist, Shakira. The look she said, was hers and hers alone. Shakira is just too fat for our Arab star to emulate. No cattiness there, then.

(From Sawt Al Umma ) BREADTH OF HORIZON

After waiting in line for hours to buy a day’s supply of bread, an unemployed man lost his head when a nattily dressed engineer slipped ahead of him. The unwise technician was stabbed for his audacity – surely a polite “excuse me” would have done the trick?

(From Al Wafd ) A NEW GROUP ACTIVITY

Based on the assumption that people work better when they are in a relationship, one airline has attempted to fast track the warming of ties between its staff by organizing a sizable group wedding. It is surely a matter of time before that other well-known truism springs to mind: couples should never work together. More sage staff are awaiting a terrible fallout once the honeymoons are over.

(From Al Wafd ) THE MAGIC POLICE

A woman and her husband were arrested after being proven guilty of practicing black magic. The evidence? Well, blood stained cloth, twigs, and dolls tied up with colored strings, of course!
