The Taliban has appointed former commander Mullah Dadullah to lead operations against US and Afghan forces in the country’s south, according to a spokesman for the ousted militia, Sabir Momin.

Dadullah’s appointment was proposed by a 10-member council and “endorsed” by the Taliban’s elusive leader, Mullah Muhammad Omar, Momin said.

Dadullah replaces Hafiz Abdel Rahim, who was killed in a US air raid on the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar in December.

Momin warned that the appointment of Dadullah would mean an intensification of Taliban operations in the region.
