A number of prisoners suspected of ties to the Al Qaeda network have gone on a hunger strike at a prison in Jeddah in western Saudi Arabia, the kingdom's opposition-in-exile said.

Saad Al Faqih, spokesman for the London-based Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia, said the unspecified number of prisoners have been on a hunger strike since April 26.

He said the prisoners were protesting in particular against "the poor quality of medical care".

"They also want to be tried or freed after being detained for more than 18 months," he said.

The claim was posted on the website www.qal3ah.org.AFP
